I confess, We Eat Fast Food

As a mother who blogs about cooking with children and healthy eating I still succumb to the lure of fast food restaurants on occasion. We recently took an extended weekend trip to visit the girl's daddy, who is two hours away for work, and to my parents for Maurene's second birthday party. In order to fit in all of the activities we left Thursday before dinner and did not return home until 1pm Monday afternoon. During that time we ate the majority of our meals in some sort of convenience form. The girls love fruit snacks so I let them purchase some sugary equivalent at a few gas stations along the way. We had pizza, McDonald's, and leftover fried chicken. The girls also enjoyed ice cream cake and some pre-made macaroni and cheese.

Why do I share this with you? Because I want you to understand that good nutrition is about doing your best. The times when you are not able to feed your children healthy foods will be balanced by all of the healthy meals you did feed them. This trip I did not plan well but in times past we have packed plenty of healthy snacks and meals.

Here are some of our favorite tips for traveling and eating with toddlers:

Pack sandwiches

Or some cut up fruits and veggies

Make or buy some healthy muffins

Granola bars are easy to make as well

Just keep doing your best and do not get upset if you have to stop at the Golden Arches if the family is starved. When you return home get back into the healthy eating routine as soon as possible.

  1. Same Here!! I try very hard to do everything possible to be healthy as much as we can but sometimes quick and easy things just work. Rarely but they work. Also sometimes I crave fried chicken, its something I cant let go!

  2. I love fried chicken as well! And the girls are big fans of chicken nuggets and fries. I wish we had not consumed so many fries!

  3. I confess that I have done the same thing. We eat well at home!

  4. I wouldn't beleive someone who says they never do, it's just not possible for a working family to not have to rely on fast food at some point or another!

Thanks for the Blog Frog Add, I am not following you via GFC!

  5. I am so glad to hear that, Tracy! With all of our posts about healthy eating I wanted to share some of our struggles and how we plan to try harder next time.

  6. @JDaniel4sMom, It is a lot easier at home. My troubles always come when I do not plan well for changes in regular habits.

  7. I'm a dietitian and really love how you say, "I want you to understand that good nutrition is about doing your best". I totally agree. What you feed your kids on a regular basis is what affects their health and their relationship with food the most--not the random fruit snacks at the gas station or a stop at a fast food restaurant during a road trip. I actually just wrote about this same topic--we took the kids to Chicago and my youngest son took full advantage of my more relaxed vacation food policy and existed on sweet drinks and cookies for three days. It was horrendous! But we got back on track when we got home, and I learned a lot about planning ahead. Thanks for the reality check--it's important for people to know that nobody, even those of us who write about healthy eating, is "perfect" when it comes to food.

  8. So glad you shared. We had almost the same experience last month and ended up in the drive thru. It's not something we make a habit of, but we were in a pickle and I had hungry kiddos in the car. I wrote about it at Feed Our Families because I want people to know that it's about balance and moderation...not perfectionism!

  9. Sally and Gina, thank you so much for sharing. It makes me feel better to hear that I am not alone. We have been working so hard that I am sure a few slips will be alright.

  10. A good post. I came by from BlogFrog but couldn't find a StumbleUpon button to stumble your post. I'll have to stumble this later from my regular computer.
You may want to add social media buttons to make it easier for people to share your blogs. Here's a widget I have on my blog.

  11. We do too! I find it hard NOT to eat fast food while traveling. while we hardly ever go to places like McDonald's when we're home, we do when we're traveling.

  12. It really is hard to try to eat healthy while traveling. We take a 14 hour road trip to visit my mother-in-law every year and usually eat fast food the whole time. Last year, we packed a cooler full of healthier choices and stopped at a few rest stops for picnics. I have to say, it was not only healthier, but a lot more fun! Stumbled!

  13. I think it's perfectly fine to eat like this once in a while. I always think it's the habitual behaviors that influence our kids not the one-offs. Plus confession is good for the soul ;-)
