March 8 Mardi Gras King Cake

We interrupt our usual menu to bring you the Mardi Gras edition, chez Audrey. Never having been to any type of Mardi Gras celebration I was at a loss as to what we could make. The girls had a bad reaction to shell fish over the holidays and I was pretty certain dirty rice would not appeal to them. Someone, I wish I paid attention to who, posted a link to a King Cake on twitter and I was intrigued. After some brief (very brief) research I determined that a King Cake was not a lot more than yeast bread with glaze and colored sugar. So that is what we made. We cheated and used the bread machine to make the dough. I had Audrey help me form the dough into a ring for baking. She also helped make the glaze. Then I allowed her to pour it over the warm bread and then cover (!) the glaze with colored sugar. The store we visited did not carry yellow sugar so we used yellow sprinkles.
