March 13 Does a Watched Pot Boil?

Ready for action
Audrey helped momma make pasta last week. She has been really eager to learn new things and help in ways she has not been able to before. The stove is an area in which she does not feel comfortable. When food cooks it lets off heat and when that heat drifts up to her arm she gets nervous about being burned. She has yet to burn herself on the stove but she is cautious, like her mother. I moved the pot to the front burner and turned the handle away so she could be close and still safe. While the water was heating up I had her get out a spoon and then wait  for the bubbles. When the water was at a rapid boil I helped her pour the uncooked pasta in from a handled colander. We are finding was to make almost any task in the kitchen child friendly.
Tomato and Pesto Basil Pasta
  • 2 cups uncooked noddles (we used penne)
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup basil pesto
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Cook pasta according to package directions. Add tomato sauce and pesto to a small sauce pan. Heat on low until warmed, about 15 to 20 minutes. We added a little grated carrot and chopped onion to the pasta sauce when we made it so it had a few extra vegetables in it. Drain pasta and toss with warmed sauce. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Enjoy with fruit and a spinach salad or roasted broccoli.
