Sugar Cookies

In the Dec issue of Real Simple there is a recipe for sugar cookies and the many things to make with it. Audrey decided to give it a try. Her finished product will not be out for several weeks as she is making them for gifts.

And here is the recipe:
Basic Sugar Cookie Dough
Hands on time: 25 minutes (more if you are prepping for little hands to help)
Total time: 1 hour, 25 minutes (includes chilling)
2 1/2 cups flour plus more for shaping
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter at room tempurature
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
  • In a large bowl , whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside
  • Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and beat until fluffy, about two minutes. Beat in the vanilla.
  • With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated (the dough will be stiff). Shape into a disk and refrigerate, wrapped, for at least 1 hour and up to 3 days (we are freezing for later use).
